P2P raids in Hungary
NetworkA sad news came from Hungary, a country which seemed to be a very secure place in terms of peer to peer networks and filesharing. Hungarian police raided and confiscated over 100 servers, including scene top sites, private bittorrent trackers and warez forums. Affected sites include the biggest and most popular hungarian tracker bitHumen (30 000 registered users), release site nCore (which is already up though), trackers Bitlove, Independent, Moobs, Revolution and many other private FTP sites which had a connection with the scene.

Apache Vs. IIS
SecurityContinuing the theme from my previous column on the relative security of Internet Information Service (IIS) vs. Apache, I've come across more studies to support my initial conclusion.

If you remember, I was questioning the findings of a Google report that stated that IIS Web servers were twice as likely as Apache servers to be hosting malware. I wasn't refuting the data, but I was questioning the conclusion, given the fact that the report's authors calculated their statistics using server IP addresses only.

Since a single Web server can, and often does, host multiple Web sites, the published results would be skewed by any server hosting multiple Web sites. And since Apache Web servers are often used to host hundreds to thousands of active sites (and IIS is less likely to host sites on the same scale), I felt the study underreported the prevalence of malicious Apache Web sites.

Google Tools you might not of heard of.
Journal

Google is so vast that it's hard to keep up. But it's not just search, or even the new Web-based apps, which is extending the tentacles of the search-engine giant into territory beyond the reach of Microsoft. Here are 5 lesser-known but nevertheless interesting Google tools, code snippets, and professional tech training materials.

Before I get to the list, some musings on how Google approaches product development, which is certainly unlike any other company.

Firefox, IE flaw could expose passwords
SecurityAttackers could steal user names and passwords by exploiting a flaw affecting both Firefox 2.0 and Internet Explorer (IE), Chapin Information Services Inc. (CIS) warned in an advisory Tuesday.

Those who visit blogs and Web site forums that allow user-contributed HTML code to be added are particularly at risk, said CIS President Robert Chapin, whose advisory includes a proof-of-concept demonstration. Chapin is calling the problem a reverse cross-site request (RCSR) vulnerability. Attackers could exploit it to access users' passwords and usernames by presenting them with a fake login form. Data in the form is sent to the attacker's machine without the user's knowledge.

The risk is considered greater for Firefox users because the browser's password manager automatically enters saved passwords and usernames into the form.

Google to open up 200 years of news archive
JournalWeb giant Google is further expanding its online empire with the launch of the Google News Archive Search.

The web-based tool allows users to explore existing digitised newspaper articles and more recent online content, spanning the last 200 years.

People using the search are shown results from both free and subscription-based news outlets.

Partners in the project include the websites of US newspaper the New York Times and the Guardian from the UK.

Other sources include news aggregators, websites which collect and display news stories from multiple sources.

"The goal here is to be able to explore history as it unfolded," said Anurag Acharya, an engineer at Google and one of the team behind the project.

"It's fascinating to see how people's attitudes and emotions have changed through time."

Get your anti-spoofing/phishing tool
SoftwarePhishing is an attempt to steal personal information to be used for identity theft. Generally, an email is sent that looks like a valid site asking you to update personal information. The website that is linked in the email is actually a fake site that looks identical to the real site and even has what looks like a valid URL in the address bar. There are ways to tell that the site is fake, however.
